What it needs

In the squad
Firebomb in a Utility slot · A Pistol, a Repeater or a Gunslinger
The builder checks
A Firebomb carried by any Operator, alongside a squad member built to attack several times a turn.

Mechanism

Why it works

Defense is flat damage reduction: an enemy with 4 Defense takes 4 less from every attack that lands, not 4 less per turn. That makes it the one enemy trait that punishes attacking often rather than attacking hard.

The arithmetic is stark. A Pistol firing three 6-damage shots into a 4-Defense target loses 12 of 18. A Longarm firing one 12-damage shot loses 4 of 12. A squad built on volume has a hard counter, and it is a common enemy trait rather than a boss mechanic.

A previewer reports fire bombs removing Defense as well as applying Burning. If that holds, a thrown item costing one Utility slot converts the volume squad's worst matchup into its best one — many small hits against an enemy that has stopped subtracting from each of them.

The Burning half compounds it rather than duplicating it. Burning stacks and ticks each turn independently of the attacks, so the same throw both raises what every shot lands and adds damage the shots did not have to earn.

Cost

What it gives up

A Utility slot and a charge, on an Operator who may only have one slot. Burning also affects your own Operators, so the bomb constrains where the squad can stand for the turns that follow — which is a real cost for a Pistol squad that needs to be close.

Still unverified

The retail game is out. These are the points we have not yet reproduced or measured reliably enough to state as fact — recorded rather than guessed at.

  • How much Defense a Firebomb strips, and for how long. A one-turn strip is a setup tool; a fight-long one is a whole plan.
  • Whether the shipped Firebomb is the same item as the fire bomb a previewer described in August. The Defense-stripping half is preview footage and the item's name is a launch-week guide, and nothing published joins them.
  • Whether every enemy has Defense, or only the armoured ones. A single 4-Defense example is the only figure published anywhere.
  • The AP cost of throwing it, which decides whether the turn that sets this up still contains three attacks.

    TheGamer · Tier 3 — Retail review · accessed 29 August 2026

Supports: Three Utility slots exist per Operator and players start with one; the second comes from building "the Additional Utility Slot in the Den" at Level 5, and the third from the Underworld Intel Operation's Utility Slot option, which is mutually exclusive with the Weapon Mod Slot. "the Medic and Astromech Specializations can carry two charges for Utility items, while the rest can only hold one." Utilities are grouped into three families: "Explosives are items such as Thermal Detonators, Firebombs, and Concussion Grenades"; "Support items are largely used to heal or provide tactical advantages in combat…Medpacs act as a quick way to recover from damage" and "a Repulsor Unit gives your team more movement distance for a turn"; "weapons are more situational tools, such as the shotgun-style Scattergun or the Ion Blaster, which is fantastic against Droids". Uses: "if I equip an Operator with an Impact Grenade, they can only use this item once in a battle". And one reward item: "These rewards often contain Utilities such as the Wildfire Modulator, which will apply four stacks of Burning whenever you successfully hit an enemy." No AP cost is given for any item. Bylined Collin MacGregor, published 2026-08-27
