Mechanic

Zero Company displacement explained

Displacement is any effect that moves an enemy without its consent. Force Push, Force Pull, Kabb's Uppercut and Concussion Grenades all do it. EA themselves recommend pushing a target into an ally's Overwatch cone, and the pre-release trophy list confirms two further outcomes: knocking one enemy into another, and knocking an enemy out of the combat space entirely, which defeats it.

Why it is its own system

Displacement was scattered across four pages on this site before it was one. Overwatch describes pushing an enemy into a cone, cover describes pushing one out of cover, the Concussion Grenade record describes a grenade that shoves, and the Jedi Padawan class describes the Force. They are the same mechanic seen from four angles, and treating them separately hid what they have in common: they all take a decision away from the enemy.

That is the actual value. A tactics game is a sequence of enemy decisions, and a squad that can move enemies is a squad that removes those decisions rather than reacting to them. Every other build answers the question of what to do about where the enemy is. A displacement build changes where they are.

What can displace

Four sources are evidenced. Tel-Rea Vokoss' Force Push, which EA name directly. Her Force Pull, named by the trophy list. Kabb Uppercut's Uppercut, which EA name as a way to knock an enemy out of cover. And Concussion Grenades, which a previewer used to shove enemies off the map.

The list is short, and its shape matters for squad building: two of the four belong to specific authored Operators who cannot be replaced, and only the grenade is available to anyone. A squad that wants reliable displacement is largely a squad that has already decided who is in it.

The four outcomes

Out of cover. Cover reduces incoming hit chance, so removing an enemy from it is a damage increase for the whole squad rather than a control effect for one Operator.

Into a prepared Overwatch cone. This is the strongest officially supported synergy known before launch — EA describe both Force Push and Uppercut as ways to feed a squadmate's Overwatch, which is unusual, because EA rarely describe combinations at all.

Into another enemy. A trophy requires using Force Push or Pull to knock one enemy into another. What the collision does to either of them is not stated, and that is the most build-relevant unknown here.

Off the map. A trophy requires knocking an enemy out of the combat space, and a previewer did it with a Concussion Grenade. An enemy removed this way is defeated, which makes displacement a damage source and not only a setup tool — an enemy near an edge effectively has less health than the same enemy in the open.

What this does not tell you

Everything quantitative. Push distance is unpublished for all four sources, and distance is what decides whether a push into a cone is a plan or a hope. Nothing states whether heavier units, armoured units or bosses resist displacement, and a control build a boss ignores is a control build with no late game.

Treat ring-outs in particular as opportunistic until launch. The mechanic is confirmed; how often a map actually offers an edge to use is not something any preview reports, and a build that assumes one will be nearby is assuming level design nobody has described.

Confirmed

The rules as officially stated

  • EA recommend Tel-Rea Vokoss' Force Push as a way to knock a target into an ally's Overwatch.
  • EA recommend Kabb Uppercut's Uppercut as a way to knock an enemy out of cover and into an ally's Overwatch.
  • Force Push and Force Pull can knock one enemy into another — a pre-release trophy requires it.
  • An enemy can be knocked out of the combat space, and doing so defeats it — a pre-release trophy requires it.
  • A previewer knocked enemies out of the combat space using a Concussion Grenade.
  • Displacement removes an enemy from cover, which raises the squad's chance to hit it.

Planning

What this means for squad building

  • Pair a displacer with an Overwatch holder. The combination is the one EA describe themselves, which makes it the safest synergy on the site to build around before launch.
  • Displacement answers cover without destroying it or flanking it, so it competes with mobility rather than adding to it.
  • A ring-out is a kill regardless of the target's health, which makes displacement disproportionately good against whatever the tankiest unit turns out to be — if that unit can be displaced at all.
  • Two of the four known sources are locked to authored Operators. Permadeath therefore removes displacement from a campaign, not just a character.
  • Do not plan a turn around a collision until the collision damage is known. It is currently an effect with no published consequence.

What we don't know yet

The game has not been released. These are open questions we have chosen not to guess at.

  • How far each source pushes, and whether the distance is fixed.
  • What an enemy-to-enemy collision does — damage, a knockdown, a stun, or nothing at all.
  • Whether heavy units, armoured units or bosses resist or ignore displacement.
  • Whether a ring-out works on every map, and how much of a map edge counts as out of the combat space.
  • Whether a displaced enemy can be pushed into hazards such as fire for a separate effect.
  • Whether displacement provokes an enemy reaction the way movement provokes Overwatch.

Questions

Common questions

The way these come up in search, answered directly.

Can you knock enemies off the map in Zero Company?
Yes. Knocking an enemy out of the combat space defeats it, and a pre-release trophy requires doing it.
