Build value
What this Talent is actually for
The only Talent that rewards a state you would normally avoid, and +6 Defense is the largest flat mitigation figure anywhere in the game. It exists for the campaign reality that you will sometimes be forced to field an injured Operator, and it turns that from a penalty into a specialisation. It also invites a genuinely risky line — deliberately keeping an Operator injured for the bonus — which has to be weighed against permanent death at three Injuries.
Pairings
Specializations it combines with
A Talent is chosen separately from a class, so these are combinations you assemble yourself rather than anything the game groups for you.
- Heavy
Defense is flat subtraction and stacks, so +6 on top of Heavy Armor Training and a max-rank Bulwark is where common enemies stop doing damage entirely.
- Assault
The Operator most likely to be downed is the one that charges into the open, so it is the most likely to be fighting injured in the first place.
- Medic
A Medic decides how long an Injury lasts, so the two Talents are read together: heal it away, or leave it and take the Defense.
What we don't know yet
The game has not been released. These are open questions we have chosen not to guess at.
- The middle rank's Defense value.
- Whether the bonus scales with the number of Injuries or applies at one.
- Whether deliberately holding an Injury has any consequence beyond the permadeath risk.
